What is Rebuild Sierra Leone?

Rebuild Sierra Leone (RSL) is a non-profit established in 2005 to help the people of Sierra Leone through missions and relief work.

Our Mission: To encourage, support and come alongside the people of Sierra Leone by providing educational and relief services. We seek to partner with North American churches, friends and other Sierra Leoneans worldwide. Above all we strive to share the love of Jesus with His people to ultimately glorify His name.

Currently, RSL is very involved with El Shaddai, an orphanage and school for children up to age 18. RSL is in the process of raising money to build a trade school where adolescents and adults will have the opportunity to learn and prepare themselves for the workforce. A trade school like this will not only educate the students, but it will also share the gospel helping to better the lives of everyone involved.

Where It All Began

Rebuild Sierra Leone founder, Daniel Bushrah Sesay, a native of Freetown, Sierra Leone, came to the United States in 1994 to attend Colorado Christian University. Daniel and AbuBakarr S. Bangura started Rebuild Sierra Leone in 2005. The organization was born out of a desire to help and give back to their original home. The first thing they did was send a shipment to Sierra Leone of 7 barrels of Christmas gifts in 2005.

Daniel Sesay: "In 2004, I returned with my family to Freetown for the first time in 10 years. This was after the 10-year civil war that claimed the lives of tens of thousands and displaced hundreds of thousands. We went back to Sierra Leone, and my heart was broken from seeing such poverty and lack. I know I am from there and things were bad when we were growing up, but it seemed so much worse. The beggar population had increased significantly, the homeless youth were found all across Freetown. I came back to Denver and the hunger in my soul continued to grow as I started thinking of ways to help.

In November of 2006 I launched a CD project, Yu Noh De Chenj, that was a collection of songs from Agape Springs [Daniel's former Christian band] and some original songs that I had written. We did a concert at Arvada Covenant Church, and that’s when the seed of RSL was born. It wasn’t till a few years later that we gave it a name, formed a board and started planning on using the resources that we were raising in the USA to impact young and old in Sierra Leone."
